Jaap Sitters was only eight years old when his mother cut the yellow stars off his clothes and sent him, alone, on a fifteen-mile walk to hide with relatives. It was a terrifying night, one he would never forget. Before the end of the war, he would hide in secret rooms and behind walls. He would suffer from hunger, sickness, and the looming threat of Nazi raids. But he would live.

This is just one of the true stories told in Hidden Like Anne Frank, a collection of eye-opening first-person accounts that share the experience of going into hiding to escape the Holocaust. Some were just toddlers when they were hidden; some were teenagers. Some hid with neighbors or family, while many were with complete strangers. But all know the pain of losing their homes, their families, even their own names. They describe the secret network that kept them safe. And they share the coincidences and close calls that made all the difference.

Hidden Like Anne Frank 14 True Stories of Survival Marcel Prins Peter Henk Steenhuis Laura Watkinson Books Reviews

  • I loved this book because you got to take a look at what it was like for these children & their families, not just one persons story. And to hear a child's perspective. Most only hear of Anne Frank & her story. This gives you a better perspective. Not all children were treated well, they never stayed in one place/home & the confusion they must have had so young. Incredible what these people went through. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the holocaust. Especially because I haven't found many books that focus on the children.
  • This book is a bit basic for most adults and many young adults. It presumes readers know little about the Holocaust or the Occupation, and the writing seems aimed at about the 6th grade level. That said, its narratives of children's and young persons' survival in hiding under the Nazi Occupation are often gripping and well done.
  • This was a great book. I bought books as a class set for my 5th graders. However, we will skip around due to one story talking about sex and another. Not graphic, just a line or two of one story of how the girl felt like "she had to" She felt guilty, etc. but that's one part we will skip. I pair it up with Number the Stars, so we read the WHOLE fiction book, but we still read "Hidden" because we are able to bypass something that may be inappropriate, but at the same time, the stories are important. Maybe more middle school than fifth grade to read alone. Overall, my students loved it. Again, we didn't read the whole thing, but we did read the majority of this book, particularly children their age and younger. Its in separate chapters for each child. At the end of the book it has pictures of the children today. It has great text features, pictures, captions, bolded words, footnotes, etc. Students enjoyed reading this paired up with Number the Stars.
  • I thoroughly enjoyed reading this kid's book. I learned a great deal more than I expected to and when I was done with it, I passed it on to my 9 year old who likes history.

My only warning is this. If you do not want to have a conversation about sex, it might be better to wait to read this book. Although it is only one paragraph, it is a striking paragraph.
  • Very moving! Can't wait to add it to my classroom library!
  • very interesting
  • Completely satisfied.
